Out with the old…in with a very worthwhile upgrade…
Out with the old. In with the new. Like so many things around the house today, there comes a point when perfectly functional electrical hardware starts to feel outdated by technology. Our brass floor outlet in the family room is a perfect example. It has worked fine for roughly 25 years, but it was nothing more than a standard 110V receptacle. When I saw this brass round pop-up floor box from TG, the upgrade made perfect sense. The existing outlet was already round and brass, so I could modernize it without changing the look of the room. Now, instead of just having a conventional receptacle, we have a 20A outlet along with USB-A and USB-C charging right where people actually sit. I’ve changed out virtually all of the receptacles and switches throughout our house, including the garage and my shop, but somehow I had overlooked this floor outlet. It was definitely due for an upgrade. Installation was straightforward, simple, and easy. In my situation, I was able to use the original junction box, so the project went quickly. Once everything was connected and secured, I restored power and was immediately up and running. The convenience is excellent. When we have guests over, someone can plug in a regular device, charge a phone through USB-A, or use the USB-C port without hunting for a charging brick or another outlet across the room. It takes what was previously just an electrical receptacle and turns it into a much more useful charging location. The pop-up design is also very well executed. When everything is closed, the outlet virtually disappears into the floor and leaves behind a clean, finished brass cover. Press the release and the receptacle rises into position. The mechanism feels smooth and substantial rather than flimsy, and once opened, the ports are easy to access. The brass cover is one of my favorite parts of this floor box. It is thick, solid, attractive, and feels extremely robust. This isn’t a lightweight decorative plate pretending to be something substantial. The entire assembly has a commercial-quality feel, and the cover provides excellent protection for the receptacle when it is closed. I also appreciate that the receptacle is tamper-resistant and that the kit includes the gaskets, mounting hardware, junction box, and instructions. Even though I reused my existing box, TG provides what is needed for a new installation as well. A floor outlet is one of those things you rarely think about until you realize how useful it can be. Adding USB-A and USB-C makes considerably more sense today than having a standard receptacle alone, especially in a family room where phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices potentially need to be charged. At roughly $60, I think the price is completely justified. You’re getting considerably more than a basic electrical outlet. The solid brass cover alone gives this installation a premium appearance, while the pop-up mechanism and multiple charging options make it far more functional than what it replaced. This was one of those upgrades that immediately made me wonder why I hadn't done it sooner. It looks fantastic, works exactly as intended, and brings a 25-year-old floor outlet firmly into the USB-C era. Another item officially crossed off my home-improvement checklist. I do want to add, TG Customer Service, specifically Daniel Truong, (phone support) from California, was excellent. Nice that they have a call center within the U. S. Couldn’t be more impressed! Final thoughts… ✔️ Solid brass construction looks and feels premium. ✔️ 20A receptacle plus USB-A and USB-C makes an older floor outlet considerably more useful. ✔️ Smooth pop-up operation, straightforward installation, and an excellent finished appearance. ⭐️1 star — I don't endorse this at all, poor quality. ⭐️⭐️ 2 stars — I don't endorse it: has multiple faults, or significantly overpriced. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 stars — It's passable: it has some faults, some compromises, but the quality is acceptable for what it is. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars — Product quite acceptable, and it does what it promises. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars — Product that I totally endorse. Blown away. Drop everything and buy it!
